Wanna talk about a complete, heartbreaking story jammed into a few minutes? These two make me bawl, no matter how steadfast my resolve not to. I'll do well for the first thirty seconds or so, and then I feel my chin starting to have a mind of its own, feel the tears starting to squeeze out, and if I were forced to talk, it certainly would sound like I'd just been told the worst news in the world.
"Fast Car" by Tracy Chapman--When this one came out, I was a cynical teenager, but it's written and sung SO achingly, beautifully well (yes, I like the adverbs when I'm being sentimental), even jaded teen me got how sad this one is. It's currently in my playlist for Game Changer, because my protagonist has no choice but to adjust to the death of the life he expected. Storytelling in FOUR MINUTES, TWENTY-SIX SECONDS. Masterful.
"Jackie Brown" by John Cougar Mellencamp (I can't take the Cougar out, and he's lucky I've got Mellencamp tagged onto it.)--"Om-Guh" (this is how my daughter sometimes says OMG, to add emphasis); if you can actually listen to the words he's singing and not have your heart rip wide open and bleed, at the same time you're more thankful for the life you have, you're dead. Chills. All that in FOUR MINUTES AND TWO SECONDS, PEOPLE.
